Joshua Hyde is an Australian saxophonist, improviser & composer. An active performer of new music, he is co-artistic director & saxophonist of new music ensemble soundinitiative, one third of standardmodell, one half of scapegoat, one quarter of Module and guests with groups such as Ensemble Intercontemporain (Paris), and musikFabrik (Cologne). Joshua has gained international recognition for engaging performances in festivals and series Europe, North- America, Asia & Australia. In December of 2014 Joshua premiered Elliott Gyger's new tenor saxophone concerto with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra written for him to be performed as part of the King of Thailand's birthday celebrations. He has also given the Australian premiere of Michael Jarrell's saxophone concerto 'Résurgences', as well as performances of concertos by Henri Tomasi, Luciano Berio (Chemins IV), Bruno Mantovani (conducted by the composer), and Marius Constant with orchestras in Australia, Asia and Europe. Joshua has collaborated with young and established composers from around the world in performances at events such as Festival Now! (Germany), Holland Festival (Amsterdam), Klang Festival (Copenhagen), BIFEM (Australia), Brisbane Festival, Ars Musica (Brussels), Festival Sons d'Automne (Annecy), Constellation (Chicago), Spectrum (NYC), Het Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Muziekgebouw Ant'ij (Amsterdam), Bimhuis (Amsterdam), Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt (Germany), Festival of Slow Music (Australia), Macao Bands Festival, Musique d’Aujourd’hui sur Scène (MAS), Rendez-vous Contemporains, and Nonclassical’s 'the First Movement' in Paris among others. In 2014 Joshua's first solo record was released on Integrated Records, he can also be heard on recordings on the Wergo, Torpor Vigil, and maat labels as well as on ABC Classic FM and 3MBS in Australia, Radio France in France, Radio WDR in Germany, RTBF in Belgium, Radio New Zealand, and Resonance 104.4FM in the UK. Beginning his performing career as a jazz pianist in hotels at the age of 15, Joshua has since gained international recognition as a saxophonist after winning first prize and audience prize in 2011 at the 3rd International Jean-Marie Londeix International Saxophone competition in Bangkok, one of this instrument's most prestigious competitions. He was also first prize winner at the 5th International Saxophone Competition in Nantes (France) and has been awarded the Nickson, Willem van Otterloo and Welsford Smithers Travelling Scholarships (University of Melbourne), a Stipendiumpreis at the 2014 Darmstadter Ferienkurse (Germany) and was a finalist for the 2014 Freedman Fellowship. As a performer, guest lecturer & educator he has been invited by to the Eastman School of Music (New York), Radcliffe Institute Harvard University, St Catherine's College Oxford University, the University of Melbourne, the Victorian College of the Arts (Melbourne), the University of Manchester, the University of Leeds, the Royal Northern College of Music (Manchester), Kasetsart University (Bangkok), Mahidol University (Bangkok), Chinese University (Hong Kong), and has been invited to perform at the North American Saxophone Alliance bi-annual conference (Illinois), the Singapore Saxophone Symposium, the Australian Clarinet & Saxophone Festival (Sydney), and the Scandinavian Saxophone Festival (Norway). After completing a Bachelor of Music with Honours at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, Joshua continued his studies in France with Marie-Bernadette Charrier (CNR de Bordeaux, Prix de Perfectionnement) Vincent David (CNR de Versailles, Prix de Perfectionnement) and in 2012 he was accepted into the Paris Conservatoire (CNSMDP) to complete a masters with international soloist Claude Delangle as the first Australian saxophonist to study in this prestigious class, here he also completed a Masters in Chamber Music with tutors from the Ensemble Intercontemporain and an advanced diploma in piano with Françoise Buffet. Joshua has studied/taken improvisation masterclasses with Alexandros Markeas, Vincent LeQuang, Rob Vincs & Evan Parker. Currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Sydney, Sydney Conservatorium of Music, he was awarded the Patricia Bell grant upon being accepted to the program to work with Chair of composition Damien Ricketson. His research centers around the idea of Visual Amplification, the visual presentation of contemporary music. Joshua is a Selmer Paris and d'Addario Woodwinds artist.
