Markus Muschenich is a Cologne-based composer and musician.
He studied composition with Prof. Krzysztof Meyer at Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln (Diploma 2010, Komposition) and classical guitar with Prof. Hans-Werner Huppertz at Hochschule für Musik Köln, Standort Aachen (Diploma 2006, Instrumentalpädagogik). Furthermore, he studied with the composers Rüdiger Blömer and Prof. Tilmann Claus.
He received several prices from Engelbert-Humperdick-Kompositionswettbewerb in Siegburg/Germany (2013, 2015 and 2018) as well as an honorable mentioning from Carl von Ossietzky Kompositionswettbewerb in Oldenburg/Germany (2014). He also participated in several projects and courses (e.g.: John Giovanni in Aachen 2003; an opera with music by Cage and Gabrieli at Theater Aachen, Quattro staggione in Aachen 2004; a mash-up opera with music by Verdi at Theater Aachen, Next Generation in Donaueschingen 2008, Orchesterwerkstatt für junge Komponisten in Halberstadt 2009, Stockhausen-Konzerte und -Kurse in Kürten 2013, Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt 2012 and 2014) In addition, he visited the Richard Wagner Festspiele in Bayreuth in 2010. During his studies, he attended courses with Prof. Herbert Nobis, Prof. Friedrich Jaecker, Prof. Johannes Fritsch, Rebecca Saunders und Markus Hechtle. He taught music theory at the Department of Musicology/Sound Studies at the University of Bonn from 2012 to 2015 and all kinds of guitars at several music schools in his hometown Düren from 2006 to 2020.
Before studying in Cologne and Aachen, he studied classical guitar with Peter Reiser and Yoshimasa Yoshida, and attended a notable high school music course (focussing on music between chaos and order) taught by Magnus Kleinebreil at Gymnasium am Wirteltor Düren. Last but not least, he was a member of the local bands Rattle Free Brushes and The Mius Trio (electric and acoustic guitars, voice & songwriting).
Currently, Markus Muschenich is living and working in Cologne/ Germany.
