Ragnar Jónsson is a cellist who regularly commutes between Iceland, Denmark, and Germany.
Ragnar began studying the cello at the age of five and pursued advanced studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, the École Normale Supérieure de Musique de Paris, and the Iceland University of the Arts. He holds a master's degree in Cello Performance from the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts, where he studied under the tutelage of Prof. Francis Gouton.
Ragnar's playing has been described as "pure, deep-sounding, and emotionally charged" (Fréttablaðið) and he has received various awards and scholarships. During his diploma studies at IUA he became involtuntarily very active in new music projects, as the majority of the student body at the music school consists of composition students. Sparking an interest in eclectic- and academic music, Ragnar has since then passionately sought out and participated in collaborative projects with contemporary composers and contemporary music ensembles, alongside his regular cello activities.
Ragnar has performed as a soloist with orchestras both in his homeland Iceland and in Germany, making his professional debut with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra in 2016 with a performance of the Elgar Cello Concerto. He is an active recitalist and chamber musician, regularly performing at music festivals both in Iceland and abroad. He has appeared at festivals such as Nordic Music Days, Dark Music Days, Cycle Music and Art Festival, Podium Festival Esslingen, Beethovenfest Bonn, Pulsar Festival, Erkitíð, Yellow Barn Chamber Music Festival, and Ung Nordisk Musik as a soloist, chamber musician, and member of the SKARK String Ensemble and the Reykjavík-based contemporary music ensemble Caput. He has also been actively involved in recording contemporary Icelandic music.
Ragnar has been invited as a guest with various symphony- and chamber orchestras, including the Royal Danish Orchestra in Copenhagen, Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, Randers Chamber Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Odense Symphony Orchestra, and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. He is currently on contract with the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz.
In addition to his musical activities, Ragnar is also a passionate visual artist and the artistic director and organizer of PAKK Collective, a Copenhagen-based post-instrumental performance group.
