Amir Weitzman is a Tel-Aviv based composer and violist, born in 1996.
Among his composition teachers were Dr. Hana Ajiashvili and Mr. Jonathan Keren. Since 2017 he studies composition at the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music in Tel-Aviv University, under the instruction of Mr. Ruben Seroussi.
His works were performed by Meitar Ensemble, by contemporary music performers such as the violinists Nitai Zori and Moshe Aharonov, and are performed regularly at the Workshop for Contemporary Music at the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music.
Significant prizes and scholarships he won include the America-Israel Cultural Foundation scholarships (for the years 2014-2016 and 2018-2020) and a prize in the Israeli Conservatory of Music National Composition Competition 2016.
Amir participated in The Darmstadt Summer Course for New Music in 2018, where his work Plastik, Flastik for oboe and violin was workshopped and performed under the guidance of Cathy Milliken and Graeme Jennings.
In December 2018 his work Concealed Obliquities, that was commissioned by Meitar Ensemble, was performed in the opening concert of CEME festival 2019 in Tel-Aviv.
An ensemble work Amir composed for the 1930 movie À propos de Nice by Jean Vigo was performed along with a screening of the movie, in the Tel Aviv Cinematheque as part of the Tel Aviv International Student Film Festival 2018.
As a performer, he is focusing on contemporary music, frequently involving live electronics. He is also a co-founder of FIBM - an ensemble dedicated to the performance of improvised music and open scores.
His instrumental studies include violin studies with Mr. Michael Wolfson, Ms. Nava Milo and Mr. Nitai Zori, and viola with Dr. Lilach Levanon.
Amir took part in the David Goldman program for young excellent players of the JMC (Jerusalem Music Center) and was a first violin player of the young Israeli philharmonic orchestra, and participated in master-classes with Miriam Fried, Vally Blutner, Reiner Zipperling, Kato Havas and others. Amir was an assistant instructor of young chamber music ensembles at the JMC in the years 2015-2017.
In 2014 Amir graduated with high distinction from the Thelma Yellin High-School of Arts.
In October 2017 he finished his obligatory army service as an "Outstanding Musician". During his service, he participated in "Sulamot - Music for Social Change" - a program bringing musical education to children in peripheral areas and underprivileged communities. The program is a collaboration between the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra, Tel-Aviv University and the Israel Defense Forces Unit for Outstanding Musicians.
