Alyson Frazier is a London-based American flautist and founding member of London-based new-music group Ensemble x.y. As such, she has had an active role in the commission and performance of over 100 pieces of new work since her graduation from the Royal Academy of Music in 2014. Alyson also plays an active administrative role with x.y, leading the group in its rise to one of the UK's most prolific commissioning bodies.
Alyson is also an orchestral musician, appearing with ensembles such as the BBC Concert Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, London Contemporary Music Festival, Opera Holland Park, Aurora Orchestra, Royal Opera House's Young Artist programme and London Symphony Orchestra as part of their "London Jazz x LSO" collaboration. She also features on the extra-lists of a number of other prominent groups, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Alyson participated in both Southbank Sinfonia and Britten-Pears Orchestras, and acted as deputy on the London Philharmonic Orchestra Future Firsts scheme. She has been featured on BBC3 and BBC4 Radio.
As a soloist Alyson has been recognised by composer Michael Finnissy as "just what new music needs...mad as a hatter, and completely wonderful", as well as a “theatrical and compelling performer” (Andy Findon) who is “impressively accomplished with a beautiful singing tone” (Karen Jones).
Alyson is also co-founder and programme director of Play for Progress, a charity that delivers therapeutic and educational music and arts programmes as well as advocacy and well-being support for unaccompanied minor refugees. PFP is an official partner of the Refugee Council UK, having engaged with over 250 young refugees since 2016 and performed at the Southbank Centre, the V&A, and the Young Vic Theatre and worked with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Aurora Orchestra. PFP regularly contributes comprehensive case studies and research on the failings of the asylum system to partners in social justice (including UNHCR), and in its founding year PFP won the exclusive Deutsche Bank Award for Creative Enterprise.
Alyson Frazier received her MA with First Class Honours and Distinction in Flute Performance at the Royal Academy of Music, having studied with Karen Jones, Michael Cox, Patricia Morris (piccolo), Lisa Beznousiak (baroque), and Gareth Lockrane (jazz). During her undergraduate studies in the United States, Alyson studied flute and piccolo with Walfrid Kujala at Northwestern University.
