Jaakko Ilmari Warén (b. April 27, 1970 Espoo) is a Finnish-American composer and producer. He studied at the Sibelius Academy as a student of Einojuhani Rautavaara and Kalevi Aho until he moved to the United States in 1989. There he continued his composition studies under Arnold Schönberg's assistant Richard Hoffmann. Warén graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory in 1993, where he was awarded the American Society of Composers and Publishers Raymond Hubbell Composition Award. While studying at Oberlin, he also began to familiarize himself with electro-acoustic music and ethnomusicology. He learned to play several ethnic string and percussion instruments and performed e.g. In the Javanese Gamelan group that worked in Oberlin. During that time, he also participated in many compositional events where his music was performed, such as the Cleveland Chamber Symphony Young & Emerging Composers, Midwest Composers Symposium, Korvat auki, Ung Nordisk Music Festival, SYZYGY New Music Concert Series at Rice University, The Juilliard Shcool Concert Series and Bangkok Music Festival Asian Composers Symposium.
Warén continued his composition and electronic music studies at Arts Meadows School Of The Art, where his teachers were Martin Sweidel and Kevin Hanlon. After receiving his master's degree in 1996, he started composing and producing music full-time. Since then, Warén has actively produced, composed music and sound designed numerous commercial projects, campaigns, videos, TV and radio programs and films.
