The Quintet for Bandoneon and String Quartet, Op.7 (2023) by Simone Tolomeo unfolds in four movements. A lullaby-like theme introduced by the viola with bandoneon accompaniment opens the Tema con variazioni, where six variations explore contrasting characters and tonal centers. The Adagio, in ABA’B’ form, develops an intimate dialogue between bandoneon and quartet. The lively Scherzo, rich in staccato and pizzicato, features a Bartók-inspired trio with fugue and thematic variation. The final Allegro, in sonata form, opposes a new rhythmic theme to the transformed initial theme, culminating in a brilliant recapitulation full of virtuosity and energy.
